Problem:I updated to OS X 10.4.9 and now Groupcal won't sync or ... I want to avoid such problems.
Solution:
Updating to OS X 10.4.9 places OS X's Sync Services in a condition where it will no longer work for Groupcal and must be fully reset.
You can complete up to the "uninstall Groupcal" step, below, either immediately before or after updating to OS X 10.4.9 (but you must do the "reset your OS X Sync Services" step after you update to OS X 10.4.9).
To get Sync Services to a clean state, you should do the following (time required: about 5-10 minutes):
- have or download the latest version of Groupcal (but DON'T install yet):
- quit Groupcal (if it's syncing, first wait for the sync to complete)
- use the Groupcal Uninstaller from the latest version of Groupcal to uninstall Groupcal:
- record your calendar setup options, including the advanced options, because you'll need to set them up, again (but your other settings should be retained)
- when prompted, leave both "Remove" options unchecked/off:
Remove Preference settings and setup/options from the Exchange panel
Remove "~/Documents/Groupcal Attachments" directory (if it exists)
- when prompted about "Sync Services Registration", press the "Unregister & Continue Uninstall..." button
- reset your OS X Sync Services:
- using our Knowledgebase article
— OR—
- using the following steps:
- This will cause OS X's Sync Services to completely (re)initialize its data structures, so it's more serious than a reset. When the system restarts, it may take some time for Sync Services to be updated if you have large iCal calendars (or other sync'able data).
Note that Apple specifically recommends against this kind of thing, but it normally works even when Sync Services issues remain after an iSync reset.
- quit all applications that can use Sync Services
- move the following folder to the trash
~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/
- immediately reboot the system
- empty the trash
- in addition, if all the information that's in (or should be in) your sync'd iCal calendars currently exists in Exchange, you can also:
- make an iCal database backup (via iCal's menu)
- record their names, then delete the applicable/sync'd calendars from iCal
- re-create the deleted iCal calendars, using the same names
- then the first Groupcal sync will re-populate the iCal calendars from Exchange (subject to your setup options)
- install, (re)license (just press LicenseControl's Re-Activate button), setup and use the latest version of Groupcal (but when asked by Sync Services, don't delete the calendars!)
The OS X 10.4.9 upgrade can also replace the iCal Mail.scpt file that's installed by Groupcal (because it's different and older than the timestamp on that file in the 10.4.9 installer).
Groupcal detects the Mail.scpt file replacement and provides a warning and instructions to reinstall. Since dealing with the OS X 10.4.9 update's Sync Services issues requires a reinstall, the iCal Mail.scpt issue is also taken care of at the same time.
